“Baptism” of “MOSE”   – Project to save Venice from floods

Flooded again, or will never be flooded again, was more than a crucial question for the city of Venice.

Megaproject called “MOSE” or symbolically Moses, was created for potentially final salvation of Venice from the centuries of disastrous floods.

If this works fine, modern “Moses” should keep streets and squares of Venice dry for at least 100 years. And above all, it will not affect Venetian lagoon ecosystem. At the end, who cares if a bit of corruption slew down the project, or if the budget was exceeded many times, reaching more than 6 billion euros in total.

Aque Alte  – “high waters” or simply high tides, devastated Venice throughout its glorious history.  Water enters the inner part of the lagoon through three major natural “gates”: Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia. This effect causes flooding of the entire area, including historic center of Venice, with all its treasures.

After the initial idea for the Mose project, during 80’s, world needed to wait for more than a decade, for the official start of the project in 2003. Engineering wonder that suppose to protect Venice, was planned to include a total of 78 yellow retractable flood barriers. They should form four larger flood gates at the points where sea water enters the lagoon during high tides.

The essence is that the world witnessed the most important testing of Venetian “savior” in October 2020. Yellow barriers were rising from the muddy waters of Venetian lagoon, one by one, completing the protecting line and celebrating “The Baptism” of this unique project.

In 2021. “Mose” will proudly show, how human knowledge can overcome even the toughest challenges. Respecting the environment and employing all the engineering ingenuity, we are so close to save the heritage and unique beauty of Venice for the future generations.
