The idea to create fancy and prestigious department store came from controversial Mexican President Porfirio Diaz in 1899. Combination of iron and concrete for building construction, was just a part of the innovative set of details. By the end, this structure included electricity, telephone stations and elevators. It became the most exclusive shopping mall that Latin America has ever seen – El Centro Mercantil.

Many decades later, in 1968. it was turned into a noble hotel, following grand inauguration of the Olympic Games in Mexico. The old spirit was brilliantly kept, with luxurious decoration that blasts you when sitting in the lobby.

Giant chandelier is at the entrance, art nouveau elevators are still operating and its true masterpiece – stained glass roof is going to leave you speechless. One of the world’s largest artistic creations of its kind, it was made of more than 20.000 carefully puzzled pieces of brightly colored Tiffany glass. Every single guest can truly enjoy this fascinating richness of colors.

Stained glass roof was designed by French master Jacques Grubert, using stunning light blue, orange and yellowish tones on curved roof parts. However, calm green and blue palette dominates three small, charming domes on top.

Who can resist this marvel of design and architecture.
