Soccer fans from all around the world are getting ready for the Soccer World Cup in 2022. to be held in Qatar. For a curious eye, it is not only about soccer. Behind the scene, competition for the best stadium design is underway. Blend of futurism, simplicity, traditional and modern spreads over monumental facades and interior designs of the main world cup venues. Check out the pinnacle of superb architectural solutions of the world cup stadiums in Qatar.

AL JANOUB STADIUM

Incredible, elegant design, with gentle curves is signed by the world famous Zaha Hadid Architects Company. It was founded by legendary Mrs.Zaha Hadid, a British – Iraqui architect whose masterpieces are designed all over the globe. This time, inspiration was seafaring around the city of Al Wakrah, on the shores of Persian Gulf. Design strongly suggests shape of the sails used on local dhow fishing boats.

Designed by Fenwick Iribaren Architects, this stadium shows highly innovative approach regarding building materials. After gigantic steel frame is set, shipping containers will be implemented as building blocks. This is certainly practical, economical and colorful solution, used for the first time for the stadium construction. More than fascinating!

AL THUMAMA STADIUM

Its distinctive shining white facade will probably become one of Qatar’s symbols. Specially when we know that design represents traditional hat, or a type of headwear called Gahfiya. This very light, hand knitted hat is usually worn by men in this part of Arabic world. Knitted details are clearly transferred on a facade through magnificently carved details.

Largest stadium of all in Qatar, with more than 80.000 seats capacity, will be used for both opening ceremony and final match of the world cup. Design belongs to, one and only, Sir.Norman Foster and his company Fosters & Partners. Architects brilliantly played with light and shadows, while the shape of a stadium represents typical bowls used around the Persian Gulf. Link between traditional and modern is fascinating.

AL BAYT STADIUM

Design is full of symbolism and hidden details, combined with modern solutions. This stadium is almost a “monument” to a traditional, nomadic tent of the Arab world. All the curves and even dark lines on facade should remind visitors, how real Bedouin mobile home looks like. Giant tent owning provides perfect temperature inside the stadium, without using any additional cooling systems.
